SONNMRLSF: the European NMR Large Scale Facility Utrecht

DUTCH users: please go to this page

The NMR Large Scale Facility provides access to guest researchers and research trainees from EU countries and Associated States. Access is in principle also possible for companies. Currently, access is provided within the context of the Bio-NMR and EAST-NMR initiatives funded by the European Union (FP7 projects #261863 and #228461, respectively).

Our solution state NMR infrastructure consists of a 900 MHz, a 750 MHz, two 600 MHz and two 500 MHz NMR spectrometers completely up to date with respect to current and future needs of high resolution NMR. The 900 and one of the 600 MHz spectrometers are equipped with cryprobe systems for enhanced sensitivity. One of the 500 MHz spectrometers is equipped with a laser system for light-related NMR experiments. A second laser (Argon-laser) is present, for example, for CIDNP-related NMR experiments.

For solid state NMR the infrastructure has a 500 MHz wide-bore and a 700 MHz narrow-bore spectrometer. To gain access to these, please first contact Prof. dr. Marc Baldus.

Besides the NMR machine park, SONNMRLSF harbors an extensive computational infrastructure for Molecular Modelling, NMR structure calculations and docking simulations.

The total NMR time available for external users amounts to about one NMR spectrometer equivalent per year. Visiting researchers get scientific and technical support from specialists who are also willing to participate in collaborative research projects when acceptable for both parties involved.

The facility can also provide advanced training of young scientists.

Access procedure SOLUTION STATE NMR

In order to obtain access to the NMR Large Scale Facility an application form has to be filled out. For questions concerning the application procedure please contact 'your' Facility at any time! For initial discussions of the project an example application form is available here.

The general procedure for obtaining NMR time is as follows:

  • Complete the web-form, preferably after consulting facility staff first. This web-form will automatically be forwarded to the Large-Scale Facility of your choice.

  • After receipt, the form is pre-screened by local facility staff. This pre-screen considers the technical feasibility of the project. In case the proposal is not clear or should be revised in order to be eligible for the use of the facility, the local staff might contact the applicant in order to adapt the proposal. Eventually the pre-screen may also result in forwarding the proposal to another, better suited facility.

If the local staff agrees, in principle pilot experiments could be performed to assist the pre-screening and to evaluate the feasibility of the project.
  • After pre-screening the proposal is forwarded to two members of the "International Expert Panel".

  • After a positive decision on the proposal, it will be forwarded to the PI of the host Facility for final approval (in case of a negative decision the applicant will be informed and may be invited to submit an adapted proposal).
  • After the final approval, NMR experiments will be scheduled.

CONDITIONS:

The available financial support for the research project covers NMR machine use, travel to and from the facility, and subsistence costs for visiting researchers. Financial support does not include consumables needed for the material to be investigated or sample transportation. All financial aspects are dealt with in agreement with the conditions set by the EU.

The use of SONNMRLSF should be acknowledged in publications and oral and poster presentations. Also, any of these events must be communicated with the staff of the facility!

All research performed on the facility will be reported to the EU in Annual Reports.

For Visiting Researchers

Traveling is organised by the visitor, accomodation (if necessary / desired) by the facility.

The costs for visiting researchers will be dealt with as follows:

  • In principle the facility will reimburse all costs of public transport to and from the facility, including economy fare by plane and/or train. Connecting transportation from airport or railway stations in the Netherlands will be reimbursed to a maximum amount of 36 €, in the home country max. 45 €. Travel bills have to be submitted for the accounting. Visitors who come by car will receive an amount of 0.19 € per km (please provide gasoline bills, parking tickets, etc).
  • Hotel costs will be paid directly by the facility. This normally includes breakfast, but no other services offered by the hotel like telephone costs or beverages. For stays longer than two weeks we may expect visitors to use a guest house.
  • A daily subsistence allowance to cover lunch, dinner, local transportation and other small expenses is also reimbursed. Currently this amounts to 40 € per day. In case dinner or lunch is paid by the facility, the sum may be reduced. The daily allowance may also be reduced in the case of extended stays. The daily allowance starts at the day of arrival and includes the day of departure. No proof for these expenses is required.

Funding is normally restricted to a maximum of two researchers that work on a single project.

Unfortunately we can only reimburse travel and subsistence costs for citizens of the EU and Associated States.

Payment to the researcher is done by bank transfer after filling out the appropriate declaration form that will be provided after the end of the stay. If reimbursements are not completed within a period of two months, please contact Dr. H. Wienk.
